Salary:

Lecturer Grade F: £35,116 to £45,413 per annum

Lecturer Grade G: £46,735 to £55,755 per annum

Senior Lecturer Grade H: £57,422 to £66,537 per annum

The Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join us at a pivotal time. We are launching a new Aerospace Engineering degree, homed within School of Engineering, the programme builds on the School’s established strengths in fluid dynamics, materials, intelligent sensing, advanced manufacturing and electrical power systems and will be delivered from the new £110 million Stephenson Building in the heart of Newcastle.  

We are a world class research-intensive university, delivering teaching and learning of the highest quality and playing a major role in the economic, social and cultural development of the North East of England. Our research community works across disciplines to tackle global challenges in sustainable energy, transport, and advanced manufacturing.

We are looking for outstanding early or mid-career academics with expertise across the aerospace domain and a passion for engineering education, individuals who can apply their technical expertise and people development skills to help shape and grow this new Aerospace Engineering programme.


We particularly welcome applicants with teaching experience or subject expertise in areas such as aircraft design, propulsion, flight dynamics and control, aerostructures, and space systems. 

You will contribute to the design and delivery of a modern, inclusive curriculum, including modules, projects, lab-based teaching, and student support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will join a strong, collaborative community of engineering educators within the School and have access to institutional support for professional development and recognition.

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the planning and development of leading-edge content, modules, laboratory activities, student projects and assessment methods in Aerospace Engineering. This will encompass electrical, electronic, software, mechanical, thermodynamic and aerodynamic aspects applied to fixed wing, rotary, rocket and satellite applications
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across aerospace-related topics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels using modern and inclusive learning approaches
  • Develop, integrate and manage of student learning experiences within modules such as projects, laboratories, industry guest lectures, field trips and work placements
  • Identify and obtain funding from appropriate sources to help develop this new degree programme and create leading edge, industrially relevant experiential learning for our        students
  • Contribute to and coordinate a growing programme of pedagogical activity to help develop, continuously improve and disseminate the excellence of this new Aerospace programme in high quality pedagogic conferences and publications
  • Seek and develop interdisciplinary collaborations within the University and with other UK and international collaborators
  • Organise and contribute to programmes of networking, recruitment, marketing, outreach, and public engagement
  • Undertake teaching, supervision, tutoring and other education, assessment and accreditation responsibilities in line with the role of Lecturer/Senior lecturer in Aerospace    Engineering
  • Supervise individual and group student projects and dissertations and supervise students and contribute to research being carried out by staff and PhD students
  • Participate in the administrative and management processes of the school and represent the discipline on School, Faculty or University committees
  • For Senior Lecturer: Provide educational leadership, mentor junior staff, and contribute to strategic developments in teaching and learning within the School


The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience 

All levels

  • Evidence of a wide and active interest in engineering, with the ability to contribute to the multidisciplinary teaching of Aerospace Engineering, including themes such as flight, propulsion, avionics, space systems, or airframe structures
  • Experience in the design, development, and implementation of engineering solutions, whether in academia or industry, that integrate elements of electronic, electrical, software, and mechanical systems, in aerospace or closely related applications
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate complex engineering concepts and theories  in a clear and engaging way to students at undergraduate and postgraduate level 
  • Demonstration of the ability to develop teaching resources (lecture notes, slides, videos, podcasts, tutorials and practical sessions)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to balance programme development, teaching, pedagogical scholarship, and administrative duties
  • Experience in mentoring or supervising students, peers, or junior colleagues, ideally in a teaching or engineering project setting

In addition for senior lecturer level

  • Extensive experience in the supervision, career development and mentoring of students, peers and junior colleagues
  • Demonstrable experience in the successful design, implementation and delivery of complex technical and/or organisational projects
  • A strong record of working collaboratively across teams and disciplines, with the ability to build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including industry and professional bodies

In addition, for Senior Lecturers 
 ⦁    The ability to persuade and influence at all levels to foster and maintain relationships, resolving difficulties as they arise
⦁    Original thinking and analysis of complex information that has led to the bringing of new insights to the research undertaken

Qualifications  
⦁    A bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering or a cognate discipline
⦁    A PhD in a relevant subject area

Desirable
⦁    A recognised teaching qualification in Higher Education or equivalent experience 
⦁    Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution
