Ph.D. candidate (m/f/d) | Molecular mechanisms of cardiac fibrosis in zebrafish

The Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim (near Frankfurt, Germany), Department of Developmental Genetics (Prof. Dr. Didier Stainier) is looking for a highly motivated Ph.D. candidate (m/f/d) to investigate the molecular fingerprint of cardiac fibrosis development and the establishment of zebrafish as a screening platform to identify novel therapeutic pathways.

Cardiac fibrosis (CF) is a common pathophysiological condition associated with many cardiovascular complications. CF is characterised by excessive collagen deposition in the extracellular matrix, caused by increased differentiation of cardiac fibroblasts into myofibroblasts, as a response to tissue stress. Despite its clinical importance, the mechanisms underlying the onset and progression of CF remain poorly understood. As available animal models have significant shortcomings, we have developed the adult zebrafish heart as a superior platform to study CF and to enable rapid testing of compounds to prevent CF progression. The aim of this work is to investigate the molecular fingerprint of fibrosis development by combining three newly established zebrafish CF models with a multi-omics approach and validating our findings in human samples. In addition, this system will be used to evaluate the potential of pharmacological modulators in slowing down/reversing the progression of CF.

Required qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified student to join our research team. To be eligible, candidates must hold or expect to obtain a Master’s degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) before starting. A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as biology, biochemistry or a related discipline with a strong focus on molecular biology, cell biology or biochemistry is preferred. Previous experience working with zebrafish is an advantage but not required. We encourage applicants with a strong academic background and a passion for research to apply.
